Born in Long Beach and raised in Carson, California, Theresa Austria was the third of four children in a working-class family. Despite attending underperforming grade schools, she loved learning and developed a strong interest in math and science. Her high school AP Biology teacher played a pivotal role in inspiring her to pursue a career in biology.
Theresa attended California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), where she majored in Biology with a concentration in Cellular and Molecular Biology, minored in Chemistry, and earned a Certificate in Biotechnology. Alongside her studies, she worked as a tutor, conducted undergraduate research, and participated in research training programs. These experiences deepened her commitment to science and inspired her to pursue a career in cancer research.
She went on to earn her PhD at the University of Southern California and completed postdoctoral training at City of Hope, where she studied various aspects of ovarian cancer. At both institutions, Theresa became actively involved in mentoring junior scientists and high school students, which sparked her interest in science education.
At a speed mentoring event, she met Dr. Amanda Purdy, Associate Chief Academic Officer at Fox Chase Cancer Center, who introduced her to the Center’s outreach programs. When a position opened to work with these initiatives, Theresa eagerly applied and was selected. Now completing her first year at Fox Chase, Dr. Austria helps lead both programs and is developing new opportunities for students to gain exposure to scientific research. Her mission remains clear: to empower the next generation of scientists—particularly those from underserved communities—through meaningful research experiences and mentorship.
