Medical Student Rotations

Course: Introduction to Radiation Oncology

Program Director: Stephanie E. Weiss, MD
Associate Program Director: Jeremy Price MD, PhD

Goals and Objectives

This clinical rotation at the nation’s first NCI-designated National Comprehensive Cancer Center will provide the student with an excellent introduction to the radiotherapeutic management of cancer patients.

While rotating on service, students will be expected to participate fully in the initial evaluation, work-up, discussion of treatment options, and the planning and delivery of radiation therapy. The student will be assigned to one attending physician at a time, who will oversee the student’s progress and education. Students will attend and participate in departmental and center-wide conferences. They will be exposed to a wide range of malignancies and radiation treatment modalities, such as intensity modulated and stereotactic body radiation therapy, and high dose rate radiation implants. Students will attend daily multimodality tumor boards and conferences, and each individual will give an oral presentation at the end of his/her rotation.

Upon completion of the rotation, students should have a broad understanding of the approach to cancer patient management and an appreciation for the role of the radiation oncologist in the multimodality treatment of cancer. Students will acquire a general understanding of the radiation therapy techniques and modalities used in radiation oncology. Research opportunities exist for interested students.
