Treatment Philosophy

I am a urologic oncologist specializing in surgical treatment of cancers of the genitourinary tract. I have extensive experience with laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques and apply these approaches routinely to reduce the pain, recovery time, and complications associated with traditional open surgery.

I am skilled in nerve-sparing and organ-reconstructive surgery essential for preserving normal functions when treating prostate, testis, bladder and kidney cancer. I am sensitive to the particular issues regarding the diagnosis of genitourinary cancer and its subsequent treatment, including its physical and emotional effects on the patient and their family and support system.

I recognize each person is unique and requires a treatment individually tailored to them to achieve successful cancer treatment, limited treatment-related side effects and maintained quality of life.

Kidney Cancer

David Francis

Kidney Cancer

When Dave Francis gets on his bike, he feels like a kid again.  The native Philadelphian celebrated his 72nd birthday this year by riding in the Tour de Shore, a 65-mile ride for charity to the Jersey shore in 2015.

Not so bad for a guy who survived kidney cancer.

Robert Maley

Prostate Cancer

Robert Maley

Prostate Cancer

Physically fit and realizing the importance of annual physicals, Robert Maley included prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screenings in his annual check-up, which can indicate an increased risk of prostate cancer. When his PSA scores continued to rise, he consulted a local urologist near his home in Wilkes-Bare, PA. A biopsy was performed in 2003 and it proved evidence of prostate cancer. There was also a family history of prostate cancer, so he took swift action.

Testicular Cancer

Brian Derby

Testicular Cancer

Before his cancer diagnosis, Brian Derby was a very quiet and private person. In June 2014, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Brian understood the importance of seeking medical attention quickly after noticing a change in his body. “I decided to go public with my experience because if I can help other guys catch cancer early, it’s worth me sharing my story,” Brian says.

Prostate Cancer

Arland Hotchkiss

Prostate Cancer

I never dreamed that working for the USDA Agricultural Research Service as a plant physiologist might save my life. However, as a federal employee, I had the benefit of annual physical exams. Since I turned 40, I have had an annual prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test, which helps doctors determine a man’s risk for prostate cancer. At the age of 50, with no family history of prostate cancer, I was never concerned about getting the results. However, in 2008, my levels reached an all-time high.

Calvin Hill

Prostate Cancer

Calvin Hill

Prostate Cancer

While in his thirties, Calvin Hill heeded the advice of his family doctor, who suggested an annual PSA (prostate-specific antigen) exam that can indicate risk of prostate cancer. “She told me to make sure I keep on top of the levels so if there was an issue I could control the problem, and the problem wouldn’t control me,” Calvin recalls.

For almost 20 years, Calvin’s PSA levels remained in the normal range. Then, they started to edge higher and higher. At age 61, in 2010, his levels became even more elevated and his primary doctor suggested it was time to see a urologist.
