Treatment Philosophy

I came to Fox Chase Cancer Center in 2007 after completing my fellowship in microsurgical reconstruction. Since deciding to enter the field of plastic surgery, I knew I wanted to specialize in reconstruction. I chose this specialty to improve quality of life for patients by helping to restore appearance and function after cancer treatment.

I was attracted to Fox Chase because of the access to resources in caring for surgical patients with cancer. In my practice, I see people who have been diagnosed with various cancers, including breast, head and neck, melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. Often, my patients may require speech therapy, support services and treatments, such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy, in addition to surgery. Fox Chase's multispecialty approach and status as a comprehensive cancer center gives these patients integrated care to meet all their needs.

My patients often have many questions. Their concerns range from choosing the best surgical option to pain management and recovery time. It is important to me to spend as much time as needed during my consultations with each person. From this first meeting through recovery, my goal is to provide the best care possible and to ensure my patients know and understand what to expect.

In addition to performing surgery, I study surgical outcomes of head and neck cancer patients to find new ways of maximizing function and improving appearance, including the use of advanced computer-aided, patient-specific surgical planning techniques. I also gather research data on breast reconstruction procedures to determine which options may be best for different types of patients.

Deborah Gleason

Breast Cancer

Deborah Gleason

Breast Cancer

Deborah Gleason learned she had breast cancer in 2000 when she felt a lump in her breast. A breast surgeon performed a lumpectomy and a quadrantectomy to remove about one-quarter of herbreast around the site of the tumor, and she was fine until 2010, when she felt a lump again, this time in her right breast. Deborah underwent a double mastectomy, but when she developed lumphedema, she was referred to Fox Chase Cancer Center. There, Deborah underwent breast reconstruction using the TRAM flap procedure, as well as a lymph node transfer. Today, she is cancer free, and returned to her full-time job in 2015 at the age of 65. "I urge women who need breast reconstruction and who may have developed lymphedema to inform themselves about their options. A place like Fox Chase has all the state-of-the-art treatments and the surgeons who can offer them," she said. "It is a real treasure in the Philadelphia area, and I know it was the best place for me."

Jane Tervooren knows all too well how precious life can be. As the marketing director of one of the largest fertility practices in New Jersey, she watches women who struggle with getting pregnant and who want nothing more than to experience the miracle of childbirth. She also knows how fragile life can be after losing her mother and grandmother too soon to ovarian cancer.

Jane's mother was successfully treated for breast cancer when she was 49, but 14 years later lost her life to ovarian cancer. Jane's grandmother also lost her battle with ovarian cancer at the age of 53.

Mary Jean Flannery

Breast Cancer

After receiving a breast cancer diagnosis, Mary Jean Flannery decided to seek a second opinion from a specialist at Fox Chase Cancer Center, which is located within walking distance of her home. There, she was impressed with Dr. Marcia Boraas,  a surgical oncologist who specializes in treating patients with breast cancer. After learning her options, Mary Jean decided to undergo a mastectomy, with a course of chemotherapy before the surgery. She returned home just one day after surgery. "My advice to anyone facing a diagnosis like mine is to go to Fox Chase for treatment," said Mary Jean, who still goes back to Fox Chase regularly to meet with her medical oncologist. "During such a difficult time in your life, the caring and compassionate staff will guide and support you as if you are part of their family."
