Institutional Biosafety Committee
The IBC oversees research involving recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules (rDNA) and hazardous chemical or biological materials that may pose risks to human health, safety, or the environment. The committee ensures work is performed safely by trained personnel and follows the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules (2019) and Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (CDC, 2020).
The IBC reviews new protocols, amendments, and reportable events, and coordinates with Environmental Health & Safety and other committees as needed. Approvals must be in place before starting covered work.
