Factors that increase risk
- Exposure to radiation. Patients may develop sarcomas from radiation given to treat other cancers, though radiation exposure counts for less than 5 percent of all sarcomas.

Some family cancer syndromes increase a person's risk of developing soft tissue sarcomas. They include Neurofibromatosis, Gardner syndrome, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, Retinoblastoma, Werner syndrome, Gorlin syndrome, and Tuberous sclerosis.
