Treatment Philosophy

Coming from a large family, I believe in an approach to cancer care that involves the individual and the family. Personally, I treat my patients the way I would want my family treated—with honesty, compassion and skill.

Joining Fox Chase Cancer Center is the realization of a personal lifelong goal. The Center brings together the perspectives of innovative physicians and researchers to deliver revolutionary and cutting-edge treatment options to everyone. This tradition fits with my longtime dedication to provide patients with the best medical and surgical care.

I came to Fox Chase from City of Hope National Medical Center where I completed my fellowship in a leading robotic oncology program. Having had experience with more than 1,500 robotic prostatectomies, partial nephrectomy, cystectomy and neobladder, indiana pouch and ileal conduit diversions, I have treated patients with various urologic malignancies. I did this through the use of robotics and minimally invasive surgery, as well as open surgery, when appropriate. At Fox Chase, my goal is to continue offering excellent care and leading edge technology, ultimately to benefit the individual outcome and overall quality of life of my patients.

With today's advancing technology, it is critical for me, as a surgeon, to keep current with the expanding base of knowledge and make contributions that translate into reducing the burden of cancer. This starts with the individual and then applies to populations. This knowledge will be invaluable throughout my career as I care for my patients, make decisions, assume leadership responsibilities and respond to complex situations.

Kidney Cancer

Paul Kobie

Kidney Cancer

Paul Kobie said he would like to vote for Dr. Rosalia Viterbo at "Doctor of the Year" - if there were such a contest. "I'd vote 500 times!" said Paul. And with good reason.

Paul is a truck driver who routinely travels from New Jersey to Delaware. When he first noticed blood in his urine, he figured it was a kidney stone. After the second incident, he went to the doctor.

"I had a CAT Scan and MRI only to learn I had a cancerous mass on my left kidney," recalled Paul. "My wife was terrified. I calmed her down. Then she began searching for the best hospital."

Prostate Cancer

Bob Showalter describes himself as a fanatic when it comes to history. During a project researching his family genealogy, he discovered that history does indeed repeat itself. While tracing his family tree, Bob learned that his family had a history of cancer, inspiring him to stay vigilant with annual physicals and screenings. "I figured odds were, I'd get cancer, too." Those unhappy odds played out in September 2009, when Bob, who was 61, received his own diagnosis.

Prostate Cancer

John Fitzpatrick

Prostate Cancer

John Fitzpatrick is the kind of guy who likes to weigh all his options. He's also a big believer in preventive medicine, which is one reason he got a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test along with his regular physical 5 years ago. A PSA test indicates a man's likliehood of developing prostate cancer. "I wanted to have a baseline," said John, a resident of Langhorne, PA, who celebrated his 62nd birthday in 2010.

Head & Neck Cancer

On May 6, 2014, B. Mark Wilson of Smyrna, Delaware, made a chance visit to Fox Chase Cancer Center. The 51-year-old came to accompany his father, George, for a follow-up visit. The elder Wilson had been treated for kidney cancer two years earlier. Mark, who had just been diagnosed with stage IV throat cancer, was just days away from his own surgery, and brought along his medical paperwork. “I was hoping for a second opinion,” he admitted. “Little did I know Fox Chase has a Rapid Access Program, which meant I could be seen immediately. And as a result, my treatment plan changed dramatically.”

Sarcoma

I was diagnosed with a retroperitoneal liposarcoma located in the fat around my kidney in January 2011. When the scans detected a mass near my liver, the doctor referred me to Dr. Margaret von Mehren, an oncologist at Fox Chase Cancer Center who directs the sarcoma program.
