PHILADELPHIA (April 29, 2021)—Fox Chase Cancer Center will be supporting the American Lung Association with a team at the Lung Force Walk 2021, which will be held May 15. This 3-mile walk through the historic Society Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia helps support and promote lung health by raising money for early disease detection and life-saving research.

“I participate on behalf of our institution because we believe it is not only a show of support for our patients and family members but also a way to raise funds to support ongoing research efforts in lung cancer,” said Hossein Borghaei, DO, MS, co-captain for the Fox Chase team and professor in the Department of Hematology/Oncology at Fox Chase.

Borghaei is leading the Fox Chase team along with Margie L. Clapper, PhD, Deputy Scientific Director, and Johnathan R. Whetstine, PhD, Director of the Cancer Epigenetics Institute. Last year, Whetstine received the association’s Lung Cancer Discovery Award, a $100,000 grant to research epigenetic factors affecting lung cancer.

In addition to the association’s goal of supporting those with lung disease, the American Lung Association has launched a COVID-19 Action Initiative as part of the Lung Force Walk. The initiative aims to end COVID-19 and fund research to help protect against future respiratory virus pandemics.

The $25 million initiative will provide free lung health education and masks to those in need, advocate for COVID-19 and flu vaccines in underserved communities, and provide funds for research.

The 2021 Lung Force Walk will take place on May 15. Considering updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, Philadelphia city guidelines, and national American Lung Association best practices, participants and teams will be assigned a time between 8:30 a.m. and noon to report to the registration area located at Head House Square at 2nd & Lombard streets. There will be a welcoming ceremony for each group prior to the start of their walk time. There is no registration fee, but all participants are encouraged to raise funds.
