PHILADELPHIA (September 22, 2025) — Jeffrey Farma, MD, FACS, Chair and Professor in the Department of Surgery at Fox Chase Cancer Center, has been elected to serve as the Society of University Surgeons (SUS) representative to the Association of American Medical Colleges’ (AAMC) Council of Faculty and Academic Societies (CFAS). Farma will also join the SUS Executive Council.
“It’s a tremendous honor to be selected for this role,” said Farma, who is also the Paul Grotzinger and Wilbur Raab Chair in Surgical Oncology. “I’m looking forward to working alongside colleagues from across the country and representing the voices of academic surgeons within the broader medical education and research communities. This is a unique opportunity to help shape national policies that impact faculty, research, and the future of surgical education.”
The CFAS serves as a national forum uniting leaders from academic societies and medical schools to address issues impacting medical faculty and academic medicine. As the SUS representative, Farma will act as a liaison between the two organizations, strengthening partnerships and advocating for the needs and priorities of academic surgeons.
“I’m particularly excited about the opportunity to bridge perspectives from both organizations,” Farma said. “It’s essential that we continue to support academic surgery and foster the development of the next generation of surgical leaders. Serving in this capacity allows me to contribute meaningfully on a national level.”
His clinical expertise spans colorectal cancers, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, sarcomas, melanoma, and other complex skin malignancies. He is adept in both traditional and minimally invasive techniques, as well as regional therapies.
In addition to his clinical and academic work, Farma is a recognized leader and mentor. He serves as State Chair of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and has mentored numerous medical students, residents, and fellows. He is well known for his dedication to patient care, surgical education, and professional development.
Among his many accolades, Farma received the 2024 Pennsylvania Impact Award in recognition of his compassion and surgical skill. He has also been consistently named a Top Doctor by Castle Connolly and Philadelphia magazine.
Farma will officially begin his term with the CFAS and SUS Executive Council later this year.
