How Teenagers are Supporting Cancer Patients

  • Several years ago, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer.

My brother and I were young at the time and we were scared. Fortunately, she survived her treatment and is doing great today. As I got older, I wanted to make a difference for people confronting cancer. That’s when my idea came to life.

I decided to start a club at my school where students could work together to fight this disease. Teens Tackling Cancer (TTC) is now one of many clubs at my school, Hatboro-Horsham High School. The club focuses on fundraising and support for many cancer organizations. An example of some of them are; The American Cancer Society, Peter’s Powerhouse Foundation, Cancer Support Community of Philadelphia, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Dan’s Voice, Gilda’s Club and Beat it Beads Against Breast Cancer.

Last year when I was in 10th grade I wrote a proposal outlining my goals for the Teens Tackling Cancer Club. I sent the proposal to the Mr. Williams, our Principal and Mr. James, our Activities Director.

When they responded, I was very excited and proud that my club was approved! The club officially opened for membership and launched on September 17, 2014.

Teens Tackling Cancer is not only one of the newest clubs in the school but it’s also one of the largest clubs in the High School. Today I am honored that TTC is 204 members strong! That is 10% of the entire student body unified in our mission to support Cancer patients, families and charitable organizations. In just six short months, we as a club have volunteered at 11 events so far this year and there are still more planned on the TTC calendar.

Through our events we have raised $541 for the American Cancer Society and $420 to Dan’s Voice, a chapter of the Board of Associates of Fox Chase Cancer Center. This check will help them purchase a video endoscope for patients with head and neck cancer. Collectively, we have volunteered for countless community service hours.
