Dr. W. Thomas London Award For Excellence in Research Ethics

In honor of Dr. W. Thomas, MD, the award for Excellence in Research Ethics was created to recognize individuals affiliated with Fox Chase Cancer Center who demonstrate excellence in supporting and promoting ethical oversight of human subjects research.

Dr. London was the chairman of the IRB for over 20 years, first assuming responsibilities in 1988. He remains Chairperson Emeritus to this day. Under his leadership as Chairman of the IRB, FCCC was one of the first institutions to have its IRB accredited by AAHRPP in July 2004. 

Inaugural Award Winner

On September 8, 2015, a Special Tea took place to recognize Richard Needleman, RPh, as the Inaugural Recipient of the Award

As a committee member for over 15 years Mr. Needleman’s insight and expertise has been invaluable in conducting thoughtful review of research proposals to ensure patient safety.  Mr. Needleman has provided senior leadership for the IRB and he has helped new members appreciate the ethical issues involved in IRB deliberations. 

In addition, Mr. Needleman directs FCCC Investigational Pharmacy, ensuring the highest level of patient safety and accountability in the use of investigational agents at the center. 

Eligibility

Individuals affiliated with Fox Chase Cancer Center who are involved in the ethical oversight of human subjects research. Such individuals include, but are not limited to:

  • Members of the Institutional Review Board
  • Staff in the Institutional Review Board office
  • Staff in the Clinical Trials Office
  • Faculty involved in human subjects research

Nominations

The nomination should consist of the individual’s name, contact information, and a brief paragraph explaining why the individual should be considered for the Dr. W.

Thomas London Award.

A call for nominations will be announced annually in May with the award presented at a Special Tea in September.
