Fox Chase Cancer Center’s Mobile Screening Program plays a vital role in delivering cancer screening and prevention services directly to communities throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania. By delivering care outside traditional clinical settings, the program helps address barriers such as transportation challenges, inflexible work schedules, and lack of insurance.

Through visits to community centers, workplaces, faith-based organizations, and partner sites, the mobile unit provides breast cancer screening, education, and follow-up support close to where people live and work. Last year, the program screened more than 1,000 women, reinforcing Fox Chase’s commitment to early detection and access to care.

For many patients, the mobile unit has been the first — and most accessible — entry point into cancer screening. A number of patients have used the Mobile Screening Program and had it detect abnormal findings that led to prompt follow-up care and improved odds of surviving the disease, underscoring the importance of accessible screening services close to home.

“This is why our mobile screening team does this work,” said Evelyn González, Senior Director of Fox Chase’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement. “Early detection saves lives, but only if people can access care. Our team is deeply committed to meeting individuals where they are and making screening easier, more comfortable, and more attainable.”

Fox Chase has provided screening mammography services for more than 34 years and operates one of the longest-running mammography screening programs in Pennsylvania. The Mobile Screening Program extends that legacy beyond hospital walls, reaching individuals who might otherwise delay or not receive preventive care.

Supporting Program Reach and Operations

Community partnerships support the program’s ability to operate efficiently and respond to growing demand. Recently, a companion vehicle was donated to the program, providing transportation for the team of technologists and program coordinators to screening sites.

“The John Kennedy Dealerships were proud to provide this vehicle, giving it new life in a role that directly benefits the community,” said Scott Noble, Director of Marketing at John Kennedy Dealerships. “Today, this contribution stands as one of the most meaningful initiatives our dealership group has undertaken.”

The vehicle helps streamline logistics, improve staff safety, and support the expanding number of community-based screening visits coordinated by the mobile team.

“Operational support like this allows our staff to focus on what matters most — providing high-quality, compassionate care in the communities we serve,” González said.

Looking Ahead

Fox Chase plans to continue expanding the Mobile Screening Program’s reach and capabilities, with future goals that include offering additional preventive health services and increasing opportunities for community participation in cancer research initiatives. As a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, Fox Chase remains committed to improving outcomes by expanding access to care.

“Our work is grounded in trust, partnership, and presence,” González said. “By showing up consistently in our communities, we help ensure lifesaving screenings are within reach for everyone.”
