PHILADELPHIA (October 23, 2025) — Fox Chase Cancer Center is pleased to announce the hiring of Saumya Maru, MD, PhD, as an Assistant Professor in the clinical investigator/scientist track in the Department of Hematology/Oncology. Maru will see patients at Fox Chase, Temple Health – Jeanes Campus, and Temple Health – Chestnut Hill Hospital Campus.

Maru joins Fox Chase from Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she recently completed her fellowship in medical oncology and served as chief fellow. Her clinical and research training has provided her with a strong background in translational cancer research and patient care, with particular interest in gastrointestinal and pancreatic malignancies, tumor immunology, and cancer-associated fibroblast biology.

Maru earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania and both her medical degree and a doctorate in biomedical sciences from the Penn State College of Medicine. Her doctoral research focused on viral immunology and CD8+ T cell function. She completed her internal medicine residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she also served as co-chair of the House Staff Diversity and Inclusion Council.

As a physician-scientist, Maru has received numerous awards and research grants, including the Conquer Cancer Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology. She has presented her work at prestigious national conferences, including the American Association for Cancer Research and the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer.

Her ongoing research focuses on the tumor microenvironment, which comprises the cells in the immediate vicinity of cancer cells that influence the growth of tumors, particularly the role of antigen-presenting cancer-associated fibroblasts in modulating response to immunotherapy in pancreatic cancer. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and contributed to key cancer immunology work at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins.

Maru’s tenure at Fox Chase began on September 2.
