Robert Crossfield, a 30-year firefighter who was among the team of first responders to the 9/11 disaster where he assisted at Ground Zero, is a survivor of renal and colon cancer and metastatic sarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer. Bob sought treatment at Fox Chase Cancer Center, where he was put under the care of Dr. Margaret von Mehren, Dr. Penny Anderson, Dr. Rosalia Viterbo, and Dr. Jeffrey Farma, as well as reconstructive surgeons Dr. Sameer Patel and Dr. Neal Topham. After undergoing chemotherapy and multiple surgeries, Bob is now cancer free. "I've had aggressive cancers, and multiple cancers, but today I feel healthy again,” Bob said. “This is a battle I'll never give up because I have way too much yet to see and to live for. ...I feel very grateful that we chose Fox Chase to guide us and be with us all the way through this trying time for our family.”

Kidney Cancer

Paul Cramer likes to tell people that smoking saved his life, although he gave up the habit at age 26. In February 2010, Paul learned that his medical plan would cover a procedure to check for an abdominal aneurysm, for anyone who was - or had been - a smoker. Paul, who was 65 at the time and proactive about good health, opted for the test. The good news was that the results showed no aneurysm. The bad news was that doctors detected a cancerous growth on his left kidney. “It was aggressive: Stage 1 moving into Stage 2,” recalls Paul, who had no symptoms to speak of.

Kidney Cancer

At age 55, I was working two jobs and kept very active when I started having muscle spasms and lower back pain. I thought were probably due to kidney stones. My devoted wife, Inez, suggested that I see my doctor for a full evaluation. The scans my doctor ordered revealed a mass the size of a cantaloupe on my left kidney. In October 2009 my kidney was removed at a local hospital.

"From the moment I met Dr. Chen, I knew I was in good hands. He has a very calming manner and understood my fears."

Kidney Cancer

Kidney cancer is something Arkady Shteyman has lived with since 1968. That's the year, when Arkady was 19, that his father died of the disease at the young age of 44.

"Because I have that history, I get regular ultrasounds," said the electronic technician, who immigrated to the Philadelphia region from the Ukraine in the former Soviet Union in 1990.
