Accurate diagnosis is essential to choosing the best treatment for your type and stage of esophageal cancer. Initial diagnostic tests for esophageal cancer could include:
- Physical examination
- Medical history
- Barium swallow
- Upper endoscopy
Imaging tests may be conducted in order to determine whether the cancer has spread and if treatment has been effective, including:
- Computed tomography (CT) scan
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
- Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
- Endoscopic ultrasound with fine needle aspiration
