PHILADELPHIA (September 3, 2025) — Jennifer Kelly, BSN, RN, CURN, a nurse with the Fox Chase-Temple Urologic Institute, has become the first nurse in the Temple Health system to earn certification from the Society of Urologic Nurses & Associates (SUNA).
“I’m excited and proud to have achieved this certification,” said Kelly. “This will not only help me advance my career as a nurse specializing in urology, but also better prepare me to mentor other nurses as they navigate this exciting field.”
SUNA, founded in 1969, is a professional nursing organization dedicated to empowering healthcare professionals and improving the quality of life for urology patients and their caregivers. The organization develops educational materials for patients, advocates for registered nurses and advanced practice providers, and works to establish standards aimed at improving patient outcomes.
Kelly has been a nurse at Fox Chase for a decade and a SUNA member for the past two years. She and her colleagues have submitted several abstracts to SUNA that have contributed to practice improvements in urologic patient care. Achieving certification marks another step in Kelly’s ongoing professional growth and reflects her dedication to raising the level of care for patients.
“I think it’s important for patients to receive care from people who are committed to continually learning and becoming experts in their field,” said Kelly. “It’s beneficial for patients, for their treatment outcomes, and for the entire department.”
Certification is administered by the Certification Board for Urologic Nurses & Associates, the only national body that certifies urologic nurses and allied healthcare professionals in the specialty. To qualify, candidates must complete an accredited nursing program and have at least 800 clinical hours in urologic nursing within the past three years.
In her role, Kelly regularly supports patients through complex treatments and recovery processes, often serving as a key link between physicians, patients, and families. Her advanced certification strengthens her ability to address specialized clinical needs, implement best practices, and educate both patients and staff on the latest developments in urologic care.
Kelly hopes her accomplishment will inspire others in the nursing community. “With this certification, I plan to continue making a meaningful impact in urology nursing and encourage other nurses to pursue ongoing education and specialty certification.”
