I was drawn to work in cancer as a specialty, because I appreciate the space that it provides for patients who might have had experienced cancer themselves or have a strong family history of cancer to speak about this experience. Many people have these experiences, but healthcare structures don’t always allow for the time to discuss the impacts of these experiences. As part of a cancer genetic counseling session, I have the opportunity to explore the medical and family history in depth and learn more about the patient and their values. I approach my work with an attitude of universal respect and patience, as it is a privilege to be privy to intimate details of medical history and family dynamics.
