Growing up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Khadijah A. Mitchell did not know any scientists. What she did know was that she loved science, asked a lot of questions, and was fascinated by how a tiny change in DNA could change someone’s life. At the age of 12, a conversation with a Black genetic counselor, one of only a handful in the country at the time, sparked a dream that seemed impossibly specific: earning a PhD in Human Genetics from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. That dream would ultimately take nearly two decades of education and training, including a BS in Biology from the University of Pittsburgh, a MS in Biology from Duquesne University, and a PhD in Human Genetics and Molecular Biology from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, as well as post-masters and post-doctoral research fellowships at the National Institutes of Health (NHGRI and NCI). Along the way, mentors, unexpected opportunities, setbacks, and a commitment to remaining authentic helped shape both her career and her approach to leadership and mentorship. Today, she often refers to her mother as her “first PI” and credits her many mentors for helping her navigate a path that was anything but linear. Dr. Mitchell is now an Assistant Professor in the Cancer Prevention and Control Program at the Fox Chase Cancer Center. Her research focuses on understanding how genetics, environmental exposures, and behavioral factors contribute to cancer risk and treatment outcomes, with the goal of advancing precision prevention and precision medicine for high-risk populations and underserved communities. She is also the founder of the Radon Health Equity Workgroup and an advisor to the Pennsylvania Department of Health Office of Health Equity. As a scientist, mentor, educator, and advocate, Dr. Mitchell is passionate about helping trainees discover that there is no single blueprint for success. Her career journey reflects a simple lesson: sometimes the most meaningful opportunities are the ones you never planned for.
