
Born and raised in Germany, he is the eldest son of a Kurdish family who arrived from Turkey under the Gastarbeiter (guest worker) recruitment initiative, a post-World War II effort to help rebuild Germany's industry. Growing up in an industrial company town, he faced significant socio-economic challenges that shaped his resilience, fueled his determination, and ultimately directed his journey into research and medicine.
The first in his family tree to graduate from university, he earned his bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Düsseldorf and completed his master’s in molecular biophysics at the Research Center Jülich in Germany. He completed his PhD studies in cancer biology and immunology at Children's Hospital Los Angeles/University of Southern California, graduating summa cum laude from the University of Düsseldorf as a joint PhD student. He then pursued postdoctoral training in epigenomics and organoid modeling at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York. Launching his independent laboratory at Fox Chase during the height of the pandemic, he has since been recognized with prestigious scholar awards from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the V Foundation, the Leukemia Research Foundation, the Forbeck Foundation, and the American Society of Hematology.
Today, his research bridges basic and translational science to uncover disease and resistance-driving mechanisms and develop innovative therapeutic strategies that target cancer cells to benefit patients.
