Hospital Charges - What You Should Know

As of January 1, 2019, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is requiring that all hospitals post their list of standard charges, commonly referred to as the "Charge Description Master (CDM)" online in a readable format and update it annually. Here is some important information to help you understand our pricing.

About the “CDM”

  • A CDM is a list of medical codes and prices for every service a hospital provides to patients.
  • Each hospital has its own CDM list that is used for billing purposes.
  • The CDM list is not the best tool for patients to figure out how much their healthcare services will cost because the cost is driven by the co-pay, deductible, or co-insurance the patient’s insurance plan requires the patient to pay.
  • Most people do not know the medical codes used for their care before they receive treatment.
  • Implants, supplies, and some pharmaceuticals are based on a factor of cost, therefore they are denoted as $0.00 in the CDM list.

What is included in the CDM price?

  • Hospital costs, which include 24/7 services, such as the Emergency Room and laboratory testing, medical supplies and pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and technology upgrades, hospital facilities, patient dietary and laundry services, as well as patient support, such as social services and financial counseling.
  • In addition, the price includes funding for community outreach and community education programs, and our overall mix of services.

How much money will I be asked to pay out-of-pocket?

The best way to understand what you will pay out-of-pocket is to work with your hospital and your insurer. In general:

  • Individuals with insurance are responsible for any co-payments, co-insurance, or deductible due.
  • Individuals without insurance might be eligible for financial assistance or charity care, or may be able to receive a reduced price from the hospital under its self-pay policy.
