Bladder Cancer
In July 2009, Jay Kernan was referred to a local urologist to treat urinary bleeding and pain. Following several rounds of tests, Jay was diagnosed with advanced stage bladder cancer. “The urologist suggested I see an expert at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia,” shares Jay, who resides with his wife, Gaetana, in a rural section of Salem County, NJ. Gaetana expressed her desire for Jay to be treated in Philadelphia, where more advanced cancer treatment is available. Jay called Fox Chase and made an appointment with Richard E. Greenberg, MD, FACS, chief of urologic surgery and Elizabeth Plimack, MD, MS, a medical oncologist at Fox Chase. Both specialize in treating patients with advanced bladder cancer.

Bladder Cancer

Richard Frantz was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2010 when he was 63. He made an appointment with Fox Chase Cancer Center to seek a second opinion on his treatment, after hearing a disappointing outlook from other specialists. At Fox Chase, Richard took part in a clinical trial testing a new medication for bladder cancer. By 2014, he was getting back to his regular life and enjoying all the things he did before his diagnosis. Today, Richard continues to be monitored at Fox Chase, but recent scans have shown no signs of cancer. "I always recommend Fox Chase because of the access to clinical trials that isn’t available at community hospitals," he said. "I credit my Fox Chase oncologist and her suggestion to enroll in the clinical trial for saving my life."

In 1980, Albert Egner was at home one day when his phone rang. On the other end was a woman he had never met before, named Bernadette, who had dialed her old phone number out of curiosity. It turned out that Al was the lucky person who inherited her phone number. After a long conversation, they decided to meet. A courtship began and continued for 20 years, when Al decided to make it "official." The two married in 2002, when Albert was in his early 60's.

Paul Cervone was diagnosed with bladder cancer around the time he turned 50. He sought treatment at Fox Chase Cancer Center, and underwent both radiation and surgical procedures, under the care of Dr. Richard Greenberg and Dr. Elizabeth Plimack. After a long journey, with more than one recurrence, Paul has now been cancer free since 2011. "I have seen the level of care some cancer patients have received at other hospitals, and I have found them to not meet the treatment I received at Fox Chase," he said. "I have recommended Fox Chase to friends and will continue to do so. The Fox Chase team not only treated my cancers but also extended my life."
