Johnathan Whetstine, PhD, Director of the Cancer Epigenetics Institute

We’re thrilled to highlight the recent CBS-3 feature on Johnathan Whetstine, PhD, director of the Cancer Epigenetics Institute (CEI) at Fox Chase Cancer Center, which showcased both his groundbreaking research and his personal commitment to lung cancer advocacy.

Dr. Whetstine’s lab is at the forefront of understanding how DNA and epigenetic changes drive cancer progression and resistance to treatment. His team’s work, particularly focused on lung cancer, aims to uncover mechanisms that could lead to more effective therapies—efforts that have earned him multiple Lung Cancer Discovery Awards.

The CBS-3 segment also shared a personal side of Dr. Whetstine’s story: his mother, Jeanne Whetstine, is a survivor of four different cancers. Together, they will participate in this weekend’s Lung Force Walk at the Philadelphia Zoo, underscoring the powerful connection between research and real lives.

Founded in 2021, the Cancer Epigenetics Institute serves as a national hub for cutting-edge research, bringing together scientists to study how epigenetic mechanisms promote cancer and resistance to therapy. The institute is driving collaborations that translate discoveries into real-world advances in cancer care.

This recognition reflects the CEI’s mission to bridge innovative science with meaningful impact. Congratulations to Dr. Whetstine and the entire CEI team for their continued leadership in the fight against cancer.
