Dear Fox Chase Cancer Center Patient,

You may have heard that, over the past several months, Fox Chase Cancer Center has been exploring a potential affiliation with Temple University Health System. I am pleased to announce that on December 15, Fox Chase signed an affiliation agreement to unite two of Philadelphia's most celebrated institutions. This is a pivotal moment in our 107-year history—one that will expand our ability to provide the best cancer care to our patients and their families for decades to come.

Please be assured that the affiliation will in no way change our patients' ability to be treated by their current physicians at our current hospital or to use their health insurance at Fox Chase.

Under the terms of the agreement, Fox Chase will retain its identity and mission as an affiliate of the Temple University Health System. Our name will remain "Fox Chase Cancer Center." We will continue to be a thriving National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center as a member of Temple University Health System, a $1 billion integrated academic health system. And we will gain a solid, stable partner to help realize our plans for long-term growth to meet the increasing needs of current and future patients.

The affiliation addresses many of Fox Chase's needs for additional space and presents important new opportunities for Fox Chase, Temple University Health System, and the communities we serve. The combination strengthens Philadelphia as a destination for individuals seeking state-ofthe-art cancer treatment, as well as for leading clinicians and researchers.

How will Fox Chase patients benefit in the short term?

• Fox Chase's current hospital operations will extend and connect to portions of the adjoining Jeanes Hospital, a member of the Temple University Health System with 176 beds and a 33-acre campus.


• Patients seeking care at either Fox Chase or Jeanes Hospital will be able to take advantage of a comprehensive set of clinical facilities and services. For Fox Chase patients, expanded resources will include more integrated use of the Jeanes emergency room and access to additional rehabilitation resources and intensive care facilities.


• Fox Chase will provide additional space for outpatient care and expand its innovative surgical services with new operating rooms and growth of our world-class laparoscopic and robotic surgery programs.

Through this affiliation, Fox Chase and Temple University Health System—and the communities we serve—will realize these benefits in the long term:

• Fox Chase will be able to offer most inpatients private rooms by 2014.


• Fox Chase's clinical trials will be expanded and available to a larger and more diverse array of patients.


• In addition to an increased investment in research at the Center, the affiliation will spur new partnerships and collaborations between Fox Chase and Temple students, faculty, and schools.

Fox Chase will not only continue providing our patients with the outstanding, comprehensive care they have come to expect, but also will expand those offerings to work toward a healthier, cancer-free community. In a rapidly changing health care environment, we believe our partnership with Temple University Health System will offer important new opportunities in our quest to prevail over cancer.
