Types of Gastrointestinal Cancer

Cancers affecting the digestive system are called gastrointestinal cancer. Fox Chase gastroenterologists and oncologists treat all types including but not limited to:

  • Colon and rectal cancer
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Gastrointestinal carcinoid cancer (cancer beginning in hormone-producing cells of the gastrointestinal tract)
  • Liver (hepatic) cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Stomach (gastric) cancer

Our multispecialty team of physicians includes experts in surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and immunotherapy for gastrointestinal cancer.

Led by Neal J. Meropol, MD, members of Fox Chase's Gastrointestinal Cancer Program are developing innovative gastrointestinal cancer treatments not widely available. Some include new types of chemotherapy and therapies directed at specific cellular targets, which may have fewer side effects.

Gastrointestinal Cancer Prevention

For healthy individuals at risk for gastrointestinal cancer, Fox Chase offers the Gastrointestinal Tumor Risk Assessment Program. Fox Chase gastroenterologists and other GI cancer prevention experts provide risk assessment and screening for gastrointestinal cancer. In addition, they offer genetic counseling, testing, education and opportunities to participate in gastrointestinal cancer prevention research, including a clinical internet trial for families.
