Robotic Surgery

Highly-skilled surgeons at Fox Chase Cancer Center specialize in da Vinci® robotic-assisted surgery to treat patients with a variety of cancers. Fox Chase is among only a handful of institutions worldwide using robotics to treat patients with nearly all types of cancer, including prostate, kidney, bladder, colon, head and neck, uterine and cervical and thoracic tumors.

Benefits of
Robotic vs. Traditional (Open) Surgery

  • Significantly less bleeding
  • Reduced pain
  • Tiny incisions, resulting in less scarring
  • Less fluid build-up
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Less interruption to bladder and bowel functions
  • Quicker recovery
  • Offers greater precision for surgeons
  • Earlier return to work and normal activity
  • Less need for additional procedures
  • Fewer complications and lower risk of infection

Less invasive surgery speeds recovery

Every surgeon at Fox Chase Cancer Center has the same goal - to help each patient return to life as they knew it before cancer. With robotic-assisted surgery, that goal has become a reality. Specially trained Fox Chase surgeons can safely remove the cancer with less impact on their patients.

The robot offers surgeons improved visualization, which is crucial when working in close proximity to delicate organs like the bladder. Combining state-of-the-art robotic-assisted surgery with innovative new therapies gives patients the best chance for survival and quality of life.

What Fox Chase Patients Had to Say About da Vinci®:

How the da Vinci® robot works

Robotic is the next generation of laparoscopic surgery. A robot's arms hold the surgical tools, which the surgeon controls while seated at a console. With a three-dimensional view of the surgical field, the surgeon gains improved visualization and precision.

Why Choose Fox Chase for Robotic Surgery?

Dr. Robert Uzzo
Dr. Robert Uzzo,
surgical oncologist

Robert G. Uzzo, MD, acting chair of the department of surgery explains, "Fox Chase has more experienced surgeons trained in robotic-assisted surgical oncology than any other institution in the region. Fox Chase is also one of the leading hospitals in the nation for robotic urologic surgery. Every urologic oncologist is robotically trained."

Fox Chase offers robotic procedures for a wider range of cancers than other area hospitals. The surgical department has established itself as the dominant robotic oncology program in the region and one of the busiest in the nation - and have trained many fine surgeons who have gone elsewhere to practice their skills on the robot.
