Robert Smith - Patient Story

"I like the collaborative design of Fox Chase and find it very appealing."

— Robert Smith

I have battled sarcoma several times over the past 20 years. The first time was in 1998 when I was 54 and felt a lump on the side of my torso. Doctors at a community hospital ordered some tests that confirmed the diagnosis of fibrous spindle cell sarcoma. I was given 30 rounds of chemotherapy and continued under the medical supervision of my oncologist for 3 years.

When the cancer returned in 2001, my doctor recommended that I see Dr. Melvyn Goldberg, a surgical oncologist at Fox Chase Cancer Center. I had 3 surgical procedures over the next several years until Dr. Goldberg retired.

In 2010, I returned to Fox Chase for treatment when the sarcoma recurred on my torso. For that appointment, my team was Dr. Jeffrey Farma, a surgical oncologist, and Dr. Margaret von Mehren, director of sarcoma oncology at Fox Chase.

When I first met with Dr. Farma, I thought he was an excellent doctor. I had experienced cancer recurrences for over a decade and had met many doctors. Dr. Farma was among the nicest and most professional of those I have met. Dr. Farma removed the tumor on my torso and then referred me for a course of radiation therapy.

I have been pleased with the care I received from Dr. Farma and Dr. von Mehren. I see Dr. Farma twice a year for follow-up care and CAT scans. He makes the appointments very calm for me and my wife, Mary. Getting different treatments at the same facility is very convenient and comforting. At age 71, I had been cancer free for 5 years.

I like the collaborative design of Fox Chase and find it very appealing. As a patient, it was relaxing to be familiar with my surroundings when I was battling cancer. I trust the doctors and the staff.

Mary and I have one son and enjoy attending Southern Gospel concerts and socializing with friends. I am semi-retired and am now a driver for a local company. Prior to that, I was employed by a local utility company.

I urge anyone with a new diagnosis or a recurrence to seek a trusted second opinion. My suggestion is to go to Fox Chase and let their knowledgeable and caring team of doctors assess you. They are excellent at everything they do.
