"I can’t thank the Fox Chase clinical trial coordinator or the infusion nurses enough for their care, compassion, and professionalism."

— Richard Frantz, Bladder Cancer Patient

I was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2010 when I was 63. Urgency and pain when I urinated had sent me to my doctor who conducted several tests and gave the diagnosis. I then underwent three years of various treatments until my oncologist said the hospital could offer me no more treatment options. The doctor suggested I go to Fox Chase Cancer Center because it specializes in cancer treatment and could potentially enroll me in a clinical trial.

After my oncologist suggested I go to Fox Chase, my wife, Beverly, and I decided to do our own research about treatment options. We found places near and far that were impressive, including Fox Chase, but we decided to travel to a well-known cancer center in another state where doctors told me to prepare for hospice care.

When we returned from that center, I called Fox Chase and was given an appointment right away. Within a week, my records had been transferred to Fox Chase and I sat down for my first meeting with the oncologist. I started chemotherapy twice each month in the summer of 2013 as a participant in a clinical trial testing a new medication for bladder cancer. I was willing to drive 90 minutes each way to be treated at Fox Chase. I felt so fortunate to be part of the clinical trial that the distance wasn’t really a factor.

I have spent my career managing the family excavation and construction business in Monroe County, PA, and I have always been healthy and active. In 2014, I was able to ease back into my life and could once again enjoy snowmobiling with my wife in Alaska, Minnesota, Quebec, and on our property near the Poconos.

I have talked to several people around my town who have had questions about their diagnoses and treatment. People ask me if their friends and family can call me, and I am always more than happy to talk with them about my experience and to answer their questions. I always recommend Fox Chase because of the access to clinical trials that isn’t available at community hospitals. I credit my Fox Chase oncologist and her suggestion to enroll in the clinical trial for saving my life.

I continue to be monitored at Fox Chase, and recent scans have shown no signs of cancer. I feel well, and even though I have slowed down a bit in business, I am still working. I can’t thank the Fox Chase clinical trial coordinator or the infusion nurses enough for their care, compassion, and professionalism. I am so thankful that I found Fox Chase and am forever grateful for their dedication.
