"I took my father-in-law there 25 years ago, so I knew the caliber of care that is standard at Fox Chase."

— Michael Green, Prostate Patient

My family doctor noticed an increase in my PSA (prostate-specific antigen) level in 2011 during a routine blood test that I have every six months to monitor my glucose. When the PSA level rose again six months later, the doctor referred me to a urologist who tested me again and said it was possible that I had prostate cancer.

With that potential diagnosis, I knew that Fox Chase Cancer Center was my top choice for treatment. It is a renowned cancer treatment center, and I had taken my father-in-law there 25 years ago. I knew the caliber of care that is standard at Fox Chase.

I was 69 years old and was determined not to let any cancer treatment impact my job if at all possible. Radiation oncologist Dr. Shelley Hayes advised that my PSA level was increasing very slowly and that there was no reason to be alarmed. She presented two treatment options for me: active surveillance with regular monitoring of PSA levels, or intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to precisely target and deliver doses of radiation.

I wanted to take care of this problem rather than wait and see if it got worse, and so I chose the radiation therapy option. Between May and July 2011, I had 39 treatments, five days a week, with weekends off. I felt fine during the treatment, and the staff worked me in as the last patient of the day so I could come in for treatment on my way home from work, which was ideal.

I experienced some fatigue shortly after the treatment was over, but that passed and I feel 100% today. Since the treatment ended, my PSA levels have been low, between 0.8 and 0.9, which indicates that everything is normal.

I am very lucky and attribute my success to Dr. Hayes and Fox Chase. She is brilliant and professional, and displays so much empathy. I can’t say enough about Dr. Hayes and her staff.
