"My surgical oncologist made me feel very comfortable."

— Janet Carbohn, IPMN Patient

I was 76 years old when I began to feel the pains. The sharp discomfort in my abdomen was consistently getting worse, so I decided to see my family doctor in my hometown of Horsham, PA. An MRI was conducted, and doctors discovered a cyst. Initially not too concerned, the doctor was able to remove the fluid and sent me on my way, telling me to return in a couple weeks for a follow up, or if there were any problems.

I returned, only for them to find that the cyst had filled with fluid once again. Because that had occurred in such a short amount of time, and because there was no clear diagnosis, my doctor had reason to be concerned. I was referred to Fox Chase Cancer Center for a second opinion, specifically to a surgical oncologist.

Receiving an Expert Opinion

Upon arriving at Fox Chase, I was very impressed with the staff. I went to my first consultation with my doctor, who was kind and made me feel very comfortable. I was diagnosed with something called intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm, or IPMN. He explained that my cyst was not cancerous, but needed to be treated immediately since it had been caught early on. Although he explained everything in depth to my husband and me, he could tell that I still didn't fully understand everything. He assured me that if I wanted to, I could come back as soon as possible with other family and friends before I made a decision, which I found to be very respectable. I returned with my daughter and daughter-in-law, and it was one of my six grandchildren who pushed me the most to get the procedure done.

My doctor performed a pancreaticoduodenectomy, or Whipple procedure, which took around nine hours and removed part of the pancreas, stomach, and small intestine. I was held for around eight days at Fox Chase and received impeccable care. The doctors, nurses, and assistants alike were caring and made me feel very comfortable.

Two Years Cancer Free

I received therapy at my home twice a week immediately following the surgery, and I get an MRI and blood work done every three months. It has now been two years since I’ve had the procedure. I show up as clear and healthy on all results, and I have Fox Chase to thank. I have had no problems since the procedure, which goes to show how commendable my doctor’s expertise was, and what a fantastic experience I had being treated at Fox Chase.
