"Dr. Smaldone treated us with kindness, dignity and respect."

— Charles Still, Business Owner

Saying that Charles Still is a busy man is an understatement. A father to eight children ages 16 to 36, a business owner, and a devoted husband to his wife Debra of 37 years, Charles is a family man and was vigilant about seeing his doctor for his yearly physical exam. In July 2013, at age 57, following blood testing from his yearly physical, elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels were detected, raising suspicion for prostate cancer. “Upon hearing this news about my blood levels, I was referred to a urologist who did a biopsy,” shares Charles, who was diagnosed with a high risk prostate cancer.

Charles' wife, Debra, knew that Fox Chase was the place to go.

Facing a diagnosis of cancer, he turned to his wife, Debra, for support and suggestions. “Debra had seen television commercials about Fox Chase Cancer Center and also saw their advertisements in the Philadelphia Inquirer. She thought that was the first place we should go to find a surgeon,” he shares. “Debra knew that a hospital that concentrated on cancer would have the best resources available.”

Charles and his wife, Debra, who suggested her husband go to Fox Chase.Charles scheduled an appointment with Marc Smaldone, MD, a urologic surgeon at Fox Chase Cancer Center. “Dr. Smaldone saw us very quickly - in just a few days. My records were transferred, and he was ready for me,” Charles explains. “My wife and I met in his office, and Dr. Smaldone treated us with kindness, dignity and respect, all while offering his recommendations.” Dr. Smaldone explained the possible risks and side effects of treatment, and Charles felt confident that he had found the right doctor.

Dr. Smaldone recommended that Charles undergo a prostatectomy – a surgical procedure to remove the prostate.“Following the surgery, the nursing care was excellent and they managed my pain. The staff at Fox Chase made me as comfortable as possible during my recovery,” says Charles.

In the fall of 2014, Charles is back at work at his family’s auto mechanic business in the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia. His 23-year-old son works with him at the business.

Charles is very grateful to Dr. Smaldone for his professional and capable care. “Dr. Smaldone treats you like an individual, not just a patient,” Charles adds. “He was always accessible and very honest. That is very important for patients and caregivers facing a serious diagnosis.”
