"My friend raved about the care he received at Fox Chase."

— Calvin Hill

While in his thirties, Calvin Hill heeded the advice of his family doctor, who suggested an annual PSA (prostate-specific antigen) exam that can indicate risk of prostate cancer. “She told me to make sure I keep on top of the levels so if there was an issue I could control the problem, and the problem wouldn’t control me,” Calvin recalls.

For almost 20 years, Calvin’s PSA levels remained in the normal range. Then, they started to edge higher and higher. At age 61, in 2010, his levels became even more elevated and his primary doctor suggested it was time to see a urologist.

After an exam and biopsy, it was determined that cancerous cells were present.  He was diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer. “The urologist suggested a round of radiation, but I wanted to get a second opinion,” Calvin remembers.

Calvin turned to his close friends and family for support and guidance. A life-long friend had been successfully treated for bladder cancer at Fox Chase Cancer Center. After Calvin was diagnosed, he called his friend to learn more about his experience at Fox Chase.

"My friend raved about the care he received at Fox Chase."

“My friend raved about the care he received at Fox Chase,” Calvin says. “I called Fox Chase to see if they would take my case. I sent all my records and they called to schedule an appointment.”

A scheduling nurse arrange for Calvin to see David Y. T. Chen, MD, director of urologic oncology at Fox Chase. Dr. Chen specializes in minimally-invasive surgical techniques for men with prostate and other genitourinary cancers.

“I was pleasantly surprised that I had an appointment so quickly.  When I told my friend that I was seeing Dr. Chen, he told me that he sees him too.  I thought it was a great sign,” he adds.

From the first meeting with his doctor, Calvin knew immediately that Dr. Chen was the best choice.

“I walked in and Dr. Chen introduced himself and just spoke to me about general things first,” shares Calvin. “He then went over the specifics of my case and made recommendations.  I trusted what he had to say and followed his recommendations.”  A few weeks later, in the summer of 2010, Dr. Chen performed a robotic-assisted prostatectomy (surgical removal of the prostate). Calvin stayed in the hospital for just one night.

“Believe it or not, I had my surgery on a Monday and by Wednesday afternoon, I was hanging a ceiling fan in my kitchen,” admits Calvin, who felt good and steady on his feet. “I owe my excellent care to Dr. Chen.  He’s an excellent doctor.”

In 2015, five years since his surgery, Calvin continues to be monitored by Dr. Chen. “Each time I have gone to Fox Chase, I am greeted by Dr. Chen with a smile. He’s compassionate and cares about people.  He is one of the nicest doctors I have ever met,” Calvin says. “The best way to describe Dr. Chen is that he is sincere. He’s genuine and he cares about his patients.”

Calvin stays fit by staying active and walking up to three miles daily as weather permits. In addition, Calvin is a screenwriter, cinema photographer, writer and director of independent films. He stays involved with other men in treatment through a prostate cancer support group called Man to Man.

"I urge anyone who is diagnosed with cancer to join a support group."

“Our group meets monthly and it’s been a help over the years. I urge anyone who is diagnosed with cancer to join a support group. It really does help to relate to others who are going through a similar journey,” he says.

Calvin formerly worked in hospital management. Currently, he works as both an adjunct instructor at a local university and also for the Division of Transportation Services for his local county in New Jersey. “I can’t sit still – I like to be busy, which is why I have two jobs. I owe my good health to Fox Chase. They concentrate on cancer care and I am living proof that they are the best place to go for cancer prevention and treatment.”
