Newly Discovered Cause of Drug Resistance Could Improve Outcomes for Breast and Ovarian Cancer

PHILADELPHIA (May 1, 2016) — Many patients with breast or ovarian cancer initially benefit from DNA-damaging chemotherapies, but it has not been clear why these treatments lose effectiveness over time. In a new study, Fox Chase Cancer Center researchers showed that patients with mutations affecting a specific portion of the BRCA1 gene were susceptible to a new pathway of resistance to DNA-damaging drugs, including PARP inhibitors and platinum compounds.

Researchers Use New Methodology to Identify Neighborhood Variables Associated with Prostate Cancer Aggressiveness

Scanning over 14,000 neighborhood variables from the U.S. Census for associations with prostate cancer aggressiveness, the study identified 17 neighborhood variables that were most significantly associated with advanced prostate cancer in white men.

Fox Chase’s Richard I. Fisher and Jonathan Chernoff Elected to Historic Interurban Clinical Club

PHILADELPHIA (April 12, 2016) — In a unanimous vote by the council and general membership, Fisher was voted in as an honorary member and Chernoff was elected as an active member. Just seven new members were elected to the club this year.
