Treatment Philosophy

During treatment for certain types of cancer, patients may end up with an altered appearance. It may be on their face, ear, or breast, or it may be an extremity. As a surgeon who specializes in reconstructive microsurgery, I believe in offering comprehensive care for patients, covering the breadth of the imperfections that result from treating breast and head & neck cancers, as well as sarcomas.

I provide all reconstructive options for my patients, rather than a select few. This is especially true for breast cancer, where women are very specific about the results they want. This approach allows each procedure to be tailored to the needs of the patient.

Informing my patients about what they can expect pre- and post-operatively is very important to me. My patients should feel comfortable to ask as many questions as necessary. I believe an informed patient understands the procedure better and can accept his or her limitations easier.

The goals of reconstructive surgery are to provide form and function, especially in patients with sarcoma (who require the use of their extremities) and head & neck cancer. Cosmetic principles are used in aesthetically sensitive areas, such as the face, to minimize scarring, while effectively treating the cancer.

While I cannot fully understand what it is like to have cancer, I know that it is extremely challenging for many patients. Our goal is to provide a supportive atmosphere while caring for patients through this difficult time in their lives.

Breast Cancer

I was very busy as the Economic and Business Development Program Administrator for Bucks County, PA, when a routine mammogram in January 2011 confirmed that I had stage 2 breast cancer in my left breast. Further testing at my local hospital found that the cancer had spread to all 4 quadrants of my breast.

Breast Cancer

When Linda Gottlieb learned she had breast cancer in 2008, she sought treatment at Fox Chase Cancer Center, where her husband had been successfully treated. Wanting to keep her breasts intact, Linda opted for a lumpectomy twice, but after her doctors could not declaare clear margins, she decided her only option was to have a mastectomy with reconstruction. This time, Linda's surgeons were finally able to remove all the diseased tissue. Linda has a very low chance of recurrance, and returned to work after eight weeks. After her experience with cancer, Linda encourages other women to perform breast self-exams because it saved her life.

Breast Cancer

In 2011 at the age of 28, Tracy Gatto learned she had breast cancer after she discovered a lump in her breast. She sought a second opinion from a specialist at Fox Chase Cancer Center and immediately felt that was where she wanted to seek treatment. Tracy underwent chemotherapy, followed by surgery and reconstruction. Because of the BRCA1 genetic mutuation she most likely inherited from her father, Tracy had increased risk of ovarian cancer. She worked with the Risk Assessment Program, where she was referred to a surgical gynecologist to discuss the possibility of undergoing a prophylactic oophorectomy to remove her ovaries. Today, Tracy is doing well and even took part in Paws for the Cause, an annual dog walk and fundraiser hosted by Fox Chase, to give back. "It really takes a special person to work at Fox Chase. Everyone I met had a smile on their face and was incredibly positive," she said. "As a receptionist, I knew it can be a struggle to stay positive all day long. It’s hard to make cancer a positive experience, but I never left feeling discouraged."

Robert Crossfield, a 30-year firefighter who was among the team of first responders to the 9/11 disaster where he assisted at Ground Zero, is a survivor of renal and colon cancer and metastatic sarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer. Bob sought treatment at Fox Chase Cancer Center, where he was put under the care of Dr. Margaret von Mehren, Dr. Penny Anderson, Dr. Rosalia Viterbo, and Dr. Jeffrey Farma, as well as reconstructive surgeons Dr. Sameer Patel and Dr. Neal Topham. After undergoing chemotherapy and multiple surgeries, Bob is now cancer free. "I've had aggressive cancers, and multiple cancers, but today I feel healthy again,” Bob said. “This is a battle I'll never give up because I have way too much yet to see and to live for. ...I feel very grateful that we chose Fox Chase to guide us and be with us all the way through this trying time for our family.”
