Treatment Philosophy

I joined the surgical oncology department at Fox Chase Cancer Center in 1992 as director of surgical research.

My specialty is surgical treatment of patients with colorectal and breast cancer. At Fox Chase, we have been improving techniques by performing laparoscopy to remove colorectal cancer, which allows patients an earlier return home and less pain. Our colorectal cancer patients are managed by a multidisciplinary team of physicians. Our advanced surgical techniques minimize the need for permanent colostomies for patients with rectal cancer and offer nerve preservation. This results in improved quality of life after surgery for those with rectal cancer.

Fox Chase is dedicated to providing multispecialty management of patients with colorectal and breast cancer. I enjoy being part of this team because what we do in surgery benefits our patients for the rest of their lives.

I am an active member of the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Oncology. At Fox Chase, I also serve as the co-director of the fellowship program, which provides expert training to new surgical oncologists.

Tracy Gatto

Breast Cancer

Tracy Gatto

Breast Cancer

In 2011 at the age of 28, Tracy Gatto learned she had breast cancer after she discovered a lump in her breast. She sought a second opinion from a specialist at Fox Chase Cancer Center and immediately felt that was where she wanted to seek treatment. Tracy underwent chemotherapy, followed by surgery and reconstruction. Because of the BRCA1 genetic mutuation she most likely inherited from her father, Tracy had increased risk of ovarian cancer. She worked with the Risk Assessment Program, where she was referred to a surgical gynecologist to discuss the possibility of undergoing a prophylactic oophorectomy to remove her ovaries. Today, Tracy is doing well and even took part in Paws for the Cause, an annual dog walk and fundraiser hosted by Fox Chase, to give back. "It really takes a special person to work at Fox Chase. Everyone I met had a smile on their face and was incredibly positive," she said. "As a receptionist, I knew it can be a struggle to stay positive all day long. It’s hard to make cancer a positive experience, but I never left feeling discouraged."

Jane Tervooren

Breast Cancer

Jane Tervooren knows all too well how precious life can be. As the marketing director of one of the largest fertility practices in New Jersey, she watches women who struggle with getting pregnant and who want nothing more than to experience the miracle of childbirth. She also knows how fragile life can be after losing her mother and grandmother too soon to ovarian cancer.

Jane's mother was successfully treated for breast cancer when she was 49, but 14 years later lost her life to ovarian cancer. Jane's grandmother also lost her battle with ovarian cancer at the age of 53.

Breast Cancer

If you think breast cancer is only diagnosed in stages I, II, III or IV, think again. Deena Damsky Dell, MSN, RN-BC, AOCN(R), can tell you, "Stage 0 breast cancer is really cancer."

After an extensive career in nursing education and oncology critical care, Fox Chase recruited Deena in 2000 as a full-time clinical nurse specialist and director of the RN Graduate Transition Program, where she trains new nurses in oncology.

Deborah Davis Huberfeld

Breast Cancer

Deborah Davis Huberfeld

Breast Cancer

In 1999, Deborah Davis Huberfeld and her husband, Stan, were busy running their own businesses and raising a pair of toddlers, Sarah (4) and Jesse (18 months). Not long after Stan sold his printing business and started working for the new owners, their lives turned upside down. Deborah noticed a bruise on her breast that wouldn’t go away, but there was no lump. “I had ropey breasts so I didn’t feel anything out of the ordinary,” she said.

Robert Sklar

Colorectal Cancer

Robert Sklar

Colorectal Cancer

In February, 2014, Robert Sklar believed that he was “indestructible.” At 70, he had never had any serious illnesses, was rarely sick and did not take any medications. But, when he returned from Las Vegas feeling exhausted and not himself, Robert made an appointment with his family doctor. She ordered blood work and conducted a general physical. “My hemoglobin count was 6 and should have been 12.  She referred me to my local community hospital for my first ever colonoscopy,” he recalls.
