Treatment Philosophy

One reason I chose to work at Fox Chase is because we have the best tools available to accurately assess and treat complex gynecologic conditions. We have the latest technology to perform surgery, and as a multispecialty center, we can handle unexpected findings as well. This results in better outcomes for my patients.

I like to offer my patients options rather than dictating one treatment approach. My mother had breast cancer, which has given me better insight into the issues facing my patients. As the mother of three, I have a broad life perspective for this field. And I realize that my patients don't always understand the medical information being presented to them; I take the time to translate the information so they can understand the terminology, which helps them in the decision-making process.  Partnering with my patients to develop a treatment plan that is both medically and personally appropriate is the most rewarding aspect of my practice.

Judy Tomarchio

Sarcoma

Judy Tomarchio

Sarcoma

Judy Tomarchio didn't spend her honeymoon lying on a beach or cruising the Mediterranean. Instead, the South Philadelphia native found herself on the operating table at Fox Chase. In 2007, Judy, who was 54, was being treated for leiomyosarcoma, a rare kind of cancer of the soft tissue that can arise from smooth muscle cells anywhere in the body. "We moved the wedding up so we'd be married before the surgery," recalls Judy. "My Dave was with me from day one - he was my rock."

"I had been an intensive care nurse for more than 20 years, yet I, like most women, knew very little about ovarian cancer. "

As a person who has been diagnosed and treated for various types of cancer, I can say with certainty:  Run, don’t walk, to Fox Chase Cancer Center. I have given this piece of advice more times than I can count because I know that where you begin your cancer treatment really does matter.

Nancy would face cancer again 20 years after her initial diagnosis of thyroid cancer in 1975. She found a lump on her left breast. Her physician sent Nancy for her first mammogram at age 47, which showed several suspicious areas.

Genetic counseling was mentioned and I was told she would be referring my name to "them" and they would contact me. I would like to have left with some literature to read up on this before they do contact me!!!

[...] Dr. Bergman presents herself as a highly professional and knowledgeable physician. She is direct, but not in a way that is demeaning nor debasing. She wants you to fully understand your situation and what she needs to do and what you need to do, in order, to get you well. So, for up to this point of my treatment, she has been everything I need to tackle my journey.
