HPV and the HPV Vaccine

There are over 100 types of human papillomavirus (HPV) which infect the cervix. Approximately one third of these are transmitted from person to person through sexual contact, and about half of these are linked to cervical cancer. While lifetime risk of HPV infection is common, the vast majority of infections resolve spontaneously without any risk of cancer.

In studies, the HPV vaccines were 100% effective in preventing cervical pre-cancers and genital warts caused by certain types of HPV.
