"Dr. Farma was very approachable and answered all my questions."

— Roy Conners

As a retired telephone engineer, Roy Conners’s hands are his livelihood. Semi-retired in 2014 at the age of 76, Roy is self-employed as an electronics technician assisting clients with a variety of small repairs. After raising a family in Northeast Philadelphia, he moved to Cape May Courthouse, NJ, in 2005 to enjoy a slower paced lifestyle and to be closer to the beach. For several years he had endured an unsightly growth under his right thumbnail. It grew in size and continued to change its appearance. “Basically it was a large, ugly growth,” Roy recalls. At first his family doctor thought it was some type of virus, but after some topical medications did not help, he turned to a dermatologist for answers. In July, 2014, Roy’s dermatologist performed a biopsy. When the pathology results came back, Roy learned he had melanoma.

As soon as he heard the word “cancer,” Roy knew he would turn to Fox Chase for his care.

During his many years in Philadelphia, Roy had lived in the shadow of Fox Chase Cancer Center. “When you live so close to a place like Fox Chase, you are well aware of their fine reputation but hope you don’t need to use their services,” he says. As soon as he heard the word “cancer,” Roy knew he would turn to Fox Chase for his care.

After a quick Internet search, Roy landed on the Fox Chase website and picked up the phone to call. “They made the experience so easy. A nice person answered the phone and I was able to quickly make an appointment with Dr. Farma,” Roy says.

Jeffrey M. Farma, MD, is a surgical oncologist at Fox Chase who specializes in treating patients with melanoma. “Dr. Farma was very approachable and answered all my questions,” recalls Roy. “He’s a serious guy and I thought he was a good fit for my personality. I like when people tell me things straight without mincing words.”

Dr. Farma performed a delicate procedure to surgically remove the top third of Roy’s right thumb, explained Roy, who understood this would reduce the chance of recurrence or further spread.

"I am so happy with Fox Chase I can’t put it into words."

Within a few weeks of the surgery, Roy returned back at work and was feeling well. He enjoys taking walks with his wife, watching old movies and is thankful to Dr. Farma and his team at Fox Chase. “I can’t say enough good things about Fox Chase. Everyone there is committed to patient care. The 2 ½ hour ride from my home in New Jersey isn’t even a factor. I am so happy with Fox Chase I can’t put it into words.”
