Teen Honored for Volunteer Work at Fox Chase Cancer Center
PHILADELPHIA (May 5, 2000) -- Fox Chase Cancer Center congratulates John Scanlon, 16, of Lawndale, a volunteer at the Center's hospice program. John was selected by the Paramount Stations Group (PSG) as one of 100 teens nationwide for his efforts in making the world a better place.
PSG stations across the country selected six teens per station through their Millennium Mentors Awards Program. In Philadelphia, WPSG-TV, UPN 57 is owned and operated by Paramount Stations Group. The stations each recognized the teens at a local ceremony, presented each honoree with a $100 savings bond and featured them on television.
John volunteers with Fox Chase Cancer Center's Palliative Care Service, but he is more than a volunteer. He is a tutor to young children and most importantly, a friend to the families he supports.
"John is a remarkable young man, who is understanding, caring and thoughtful," said Heather Gaspero, whose family participated in the Fox Chase hospice program. "Our family is blessed to have John in our lives because we are all learning from each other."
"When I am a teenager, I would like to help other children just like John," said Paige, 10, her daughter.
