Fox Chase Cancer Center Mentors Host Student "Shadows" For a Day

PHILADELPHIA (November 22, 1999) -- Students from Frankford High School in Northeast Philadelphia visited Fox Chase Cancer Center as part of the Sixth Annual Shadowing Day.� A group of ninth-graders "shadowed" their employee mentors through the workday to explore different careers and learn from professional role models.

While at Fox Chase, students learned about complementary medicine, grants management, engineering and infection control as they accompanied their mentors throughout the day.� They were able to observe and actively participate in the daily work activities of the Center.� "Shadowing Day has been a great experience for me," said Shalena Heard of Frankford.� "I've learned a lot."

Thousands of ninth grade students from Philadelphia high schools participated in this citywide event, supported by the School District of Philadelphia, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and One to One-The Greater Philadelphia Mentoring Partnership.� Students visited all types of businesses including hospitals, nursing homes, law firms, banks and small businesses.

Fox Chase Cancer Center is one of 37 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the nation.� The Center's activities include basic and clinical research; prevention, detection and treatment of cancer; and community outreach programs.
