Fox Chase Cancer Center Honors Nurses During National Nurses Week

PHILADELPHIA (April 28, 1999) -- Fox Chase Cancer Center will honor its 240 nurses at a special ceremony, Wednesday, May 5th at 1pm in the Center's auditorium. The recognition is just one activity planned during National Nurses Week, May 6-12.

During National Nurses Week, the work of America's 2.6 million registered nurses is praised by doctors, patients and other staff at hospitals and care facilities across America. From bedside nursing at Fox Chase Cancer Center, to hospice care, the tireless efforts of nurses comfort patients during their sometimes difficult illness.

"Nurses focus on the important details of a patient's needs," explains Joanne M. Hambleton, RN, MSN, CNA, Director of Nursing and Patient Services at Fox Chase. "Those details aren't always the medications and other routine tasks when treating an illness. Their focus is on the comfort of each patient and their personal needs. An otherwise difficult experience is tremendously improved by the special care and compassion a nurse gives."

During the ceremony "Reflecting on Our History...A Glimpse into Our Future," the Talbot Nursing Scholarship and the 17th Annual Nursing Recognition Award will be given. Criteria for each honor include individual dedication, performance beyond expectation, and leadership by example.

Fox Chase Cancer Center is one of 35 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the nation. The Center's activities include basic and clinical research, prevention, detection and treatment of cancer and community outreach programs.
