Humor is used throughout the film to give viewers an emotional break from the intensity of the cancer treatment process. This is from a section, animated in the film, that asks, "Just how does one photograph himself with cancer?" Kaplan is now is full remission and says he looks like himself again.

About John Kaplan

Although the topic is serious, Not As I Pictured is upbeat, very positive, and ends with John’s remission and return to health.

John is now more than two years into remission and feeling fine.

He is one of America's most accomplished photographers, having been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography, POY National Newspaper Photographer of the Year, the Overseas Press Club Award, two Robert F. Kennedy Awards, and the Nikon Documentary Sabbatical Grant. He has been featured on the PBS' program, Now with Bill Moyers, on CNN, and on NPR's All Things Considered.

In addition to John sharing his inspiring message through film showings and speaking to patients, survivors, support groups, and oncology professionals, a touring photographic exhibition is also planned.
